Hi everyone,
Below are the minutes taken by Terry Williams from the first meeting of officers of all journalist associations in San Diego. We will be meeting quarterly on how we can work together and provide better seminars, guest speakers, mixers and more to members of the local media and students to advance their careers.

All Media Groups Meeting
October 8, 2015 6:30 – 8:00
Attending: DeJuan Hoggard, Matt Hall, Lisa Haverstadt, Carlos Rico, Lindsay Hood, Donna Stewart, Elena Gomez, Tom Mallory, Terry Williams, April Harter Enriquez via telephone
Purpose of the meeting is that while we attend each others’ events, it makes sense to be in the same room from time to time to coordinate efforts and match up calendars.
Calendar idea – After a discussion about calendars, April suggested finding a forum that wouldn’t have to think about. April suggested a Facebook group that was private – she will set up. Limited to each organization’s boards. Send out pre-produced promo pieces in advance of events.  In Facebook create event. Call it – San Diego Media Group – all send logos. One person in each group should be admin.
Ideas – for group events, having event on Saturday quarterly at a restaurant, maybe one that is due a favor return.  Personal invites are great to increase attendance. Tom would like to share take-aways from conferences such as ONA and SPJ.
Panel discussions, – SDABJ planning on  black lives matter, social media. Last one was covering missing kids – poorly attended but good topic. Press Club has monthly professional development series called Nuts & Bolts covering social media, marketing for freelancers, photography for freelance writers, etc.
Getting students more involved. Need advisors within the schools who know about and can promote the clubs. Get word out to J teachers that we have guest speakers available – distribute the list and their topics.
Mentoring – always a difficult process as the concept seems to suggest long-term commitment. Suggest one day or one morning shadow. 1-2 hour shadowing, short interview, then possibly lunch.  Distribute a list of willing pros to college students. With no long-term commitment unless the mentor and mentee decide they want to continue the relationship.
Events planned –
NAHJ planning workshop for travel writers, lifestyle journalist, on November 7th, lifestyle writing across the border. Will be in Tijuana, meet at trolley stop, taxies to the meeting. Location not yet confirmed.
SDABJ – November 21 Pro for a day – annual event – if you want to be a journalist, come spend the day with us. Panel discussions in morning, mock press conference at lunch time. Students go out and make their stories, edit packages and present at end of day.
Press Club – 42nd Annual Excellence in Journalism Awards October 27th at the Jacobs Center at Market Creek.
All Media Groups Happy Hour: The Press Club has attempted to establish this at Dobson’s for the second Tuesday of each month from 5:30 – 7:30. All groups decided to try to promote this and hope it can become a tradition there. PS-Dobson’s was formerly the Press Room when the Union-Tribune was across the street.
Quarterly meeting – it was decided to meet quarterly; the next meeting will be the third week in January.
