NAHJ Convention Assistance Recipient

Back in May, the NAHJ San Diego/Tijuana chapter announced we would be giving away one free registration to the 2014 NAHJ Convention in San Antonio on August 7th-9th.

Alberto Roca was chosen after submitting an essay, and he will now be going to the convention!
Alberto is the Executive Director of Diverse Scholar and Editor of MinorityPostDoc.org.

Meet Alberto:

“I am a first-generation Peruvian-American from Houston, Texas and received my Ph.D. in Molecular Biology from the University of Wisconsin, Madison. While conducting biophysical postdoctoral research as my day job, after hours I created the web portal MinorityPostdoc.org (2003), founded the Postdoc Committee of the Society for the Advancement of Chicanos and Native Americans in Science (SACNAS), and co-founded the Diversity Committee of the National Postdoctoral Association. Since 2011 as Editor, I have been publishing original DiverseScholar articles on the issues of diversity, STEM, and higher education thereby serving as a venue for faculty and trainee scholars to disseminate their diversity testimonials and promising practices. In recognition of my achievements, I have received the University of California, Irvine Chancellor’s Living Our Values Award, the SACNAS Presidential Service Award, a semi-finalist for the Echoing Green social entrepreneurship fellowship (2013 & 2014), and was a finalist for the UNITY Journalists for Diversity NewU Startup Competition (2013).”

Alberto said he wants to build a relationship between NAHJ and the National Association of Science Writers (NASW). He said his “non-profit has received a grant to create travel awards for NAHJ members to attend the NASW conference,” and he plans to talk about that grant while he is attending #NAHJ14SA.
You can find him on twitter @MinorityPostdoc

Congratulations Alberto!
