Item 1: Mixer at Commons Bar
a) Current members met with new members.
Item 2: Meet the Boss
a) NBC 7 Vice President of News Greg Dawson
b) Greg took questions from members
c) Changing media
i. Talked about his background and career up to this point.
ii. Gave examples of the skills needed to be in broadcast journalism and how balance is giving all sides a chance to speak and fact checking.
iii. Talked about NBC 7 culture in the newsroom.
i. What job titles to look for at TV stations.
ii. Said to find time to meet with editors and producers for 5-10 minutes to introduce yourself, if you are interested in working for that news outlet in the future, network, especially if you are out of town.
iii. Talked about the role of having an agent and weighed the good with the bad.
i. Greg discussed the importance of social media and how it has changed the way news is delivered.
ii. The strength of the Internet and how websites and twitter break the news.
iii. The role of the one-person band and multimedia journalist.
iv. San Diego second to Los Angeles by one hour when it comes to local TV news coverage per week in California.
Item 3: Demo reel critique
a) NBC 7 Evening Anchor Catherine Garcia told us her background on how she
b) Greg and Catherine reviewed three demo reels from members with the group got into the industry.
Internships and starting at small town station is how to start career. and gave advice to all.
Greg said length of stories doesn’t matter, as long as good keep viewers attention
Reels should be a compilation of your best work and tailored to the position you are applying for, since this is your resume for TV.
Item 4: Future meetings
a) Social media seminar in mid-August
b) Student BBQ at end of August, before school starts.

Thanks for sharing about the meeting schedule. Saw many of the affordable corporate events NYC online and thinking to book one for our official get together in a couple of weeks. Will book the caterers and bakers suggested by my cousin. Hope my plan gets executed well.
