July proved to be a great month for our chapter leaders! The NAHJ San Diego-Tijuana chapter President, Laura Castañeda, and Secretary, Laura Acevedo, traveled to Chicago for the National Association of Hispanic Journalists NAHJ 2025 Conference and Expo.
The conference brought together Hispanic and Latino professionals from all over the country to connect and network over the course of several days. Our chapter leaders participated in panels and workshops about hot topics, including immigration, politics, and tips on how to perfect your resume and how to land your next job.
It was a pleasure to reconnect with old colleagues and meet new friends. Several students from NAHJ-SDSU, the local student chapter, also attended the conference.
The conference allowed for some time to explore the Windy City! Including visits to the Riverwalk, Navy Pier and taking in a Cubs game at Wrigley Field. We also tried the city’s famous deep dish pizza, Chicago hot dogs and my new favorite, Portillo’s!

Next year’s conference is scheduled to take place in New Orleans from Tuesday, July 21, to Saturday, July 25. We hope you will renew your local memberships and join us in 2026!
We hope our local students will apply to be part of the NAHJ Student Project. It’s a premiere training program for student journalists and it’s free to those who get selected. The application process opens in December for the following year.
